Acceptance Terms & Conditions

The following terms and conditions govern all scholarships awarded through the Broadcasters Foundation of America ("BFOA") Scholarship Program. By accepting a BFOA Scholarship, the recipient ("Recipient") agrees to comply with these terms. Please read carefully and retain a copy for your records.

1. Eligibility

  • The Recipient must be a student from a broadcasting industry family, as defined by BFOA's published eligibility criteria, at the time of application.
  • The Recipient must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a full-time student in an accredited college or university pursuing a degree in media, communications, journalism, or a closely related field.
  • The Recipient must demonstrate financial need in accordance with the information provided in the scholarship application.
  • Eligibility is determined solely by BFOA and its Scholarship Committee, whose decisions are final.

2. Award and Disbursement

  • The scholarship amount awarded is stated in the Recipient's acceptance letter and is not subject to negotiation or increase.
  • Funds will be disbursed directly to the Recipient's school and applied toward tuition and other approved educational expenses. Funds are not disbursed directly to the Recipient.
  • Disbursement is contingent upon BFOA's receipt of a signed Scholarship Acceptance Form and valid enrollment verification, as described in the enclosed instructions.
  • This scholarship is awarded for a single academic year unless otherwise stated in writing and does not guarantee renewal in future years. Recipients wishing to be considered for a future award must submit a new application.

3. Enrollment and Academic Requirements

  • The Recipient must maintain continuous enrollment for the academic term(s) covered by the award. Any change in enrollment status (including withdrawal, leave of absence, or transfer) must be reported to BFOA within 15 days.
  • The Recipient is expected to maintain satisfactory academic standing as defined by their institution.
  • If the Recipient withdraws from their program or fails to maintain the enrollment status represented in their application, BFOA reserves the right to rescind or reduce the award and may require return of disbursed funds not yet applied to tuition.

4. Use of Funds

  • Scholarship funds must be used solely for tuition and direct educational expenses at the Recipient's school.
  • Funds may not be used for non-educational personal expenses.
  • BFOA reserves the right to request documentation confirming that funds were applied as intended.

 5. Notification Obligations

  • The Recipient must promptly notify BFOA in writing of any change to their name, contact information, school, enrollment status, or program of study.
  • Failure to provide timely notification may result in delayed disbursement or forfeiture of the award.

6. Publicity and Recognition

  • By accepting this award, the Recipient grants BFOA permission to identify them as a scholarship recipient in BFOA publications, website, and social media, including full name, likeness, school, and area of study, unless the Recipient requests otherwise in writing.
  • The Recipient is under no obligation to participate in interviews, photographs, or promotional activities, but participation is welcomed and appreciated.

7. Taxes

  • Scholarship funds used for qualified tuition and related expenses are generally not considered taxable income under U.S. federal tax law; however, tax treatment may vary based on individual circumstances.
  • BFOA does not provide tax advice. Recipients should consult a qualified tax professional regarding the tax treatment of their scholarship award.

8. Revocation and Forfeiture

  • BFOA reserves the right to revoke or rescind a scholarship award at any time if the Recipient is found to have provided false or materially misleading information in their application.
  • BFOA reserves the right to revoke or rescind an award in cases of withdrawal, loss of enrollment status, or failure to comply with these terms.
  • Awards not claimed through submission of a signed acceptance form and enrollment verification by the stated deadline may be forfeited and reallocated at BFOA's discretion.

9. Non-Transferability

  • This scholarship is awarded to the named Recipient only and may not be transferred to another individual, deferred to another institution without prior written approval from BFOA, or exchanged for cash.

10. Limitation of Liability

  • BFOA's total obligation under this award is limited to the scholarship amount stated in the Recipient's acceptance letter.
  • BFOA is not responsible for a Recipient's tuition, fees, or expenses beyond the awarded amount, nor for any delay caused by incomplete or late submission of required forms.

11. Acknowledgment

  • By signing the Scholarship Acceptance Form, the Recipient acknowledges that they have read, understood, and agree to be bound by these Terms and Conditions.
