Take Five with Tim Clarke

To mark his first month as a member of the BFOA Board of Directors , we interviewed Founder and Strategic Advisor of TC Projects LLC, Tim Clarke. After beginning his career as an intern at Cox Media Group, Tim climbed the ranks at both CMG and Audacy before launching his own firm. A media and entertainment executive with over two decades of experience in local media, podcasting, consumer marketing, and advertising, Tim is an asset to both the BFOA Board of Directors and the audio industry at large.

BFOA: How did you get your start in broadcasting?

Tim Clarke (TC): Growing up in Long Island, NY, I was exposed to the best of the best in broadcasting. I quickly became enamored with radio; while many of my friends were using their cassette deck to record the songs off the radio, I was recording the jingles and promos. Eventually, I had the opportunity to do a summer internship at Cox Radio’s WBLI and WBAB. At the time, I never could have fathomed that it was the beginning of an incredible 16-year journey with the company. I was very fortunate to be surrounded by great people who took an interest in my excitement for broadcasting and helped me find ways to grow.

BFOA: You’ve worked in both on-air and digital programming and market management. What has moving through those different parts of the business taught you?

TC: It has reinforced to me that this is truly a team sport. In order to maximize our success, we need to have great collaboration and cohesiveness across all areas of the business. This is also where having a great culture is critical. There are so many challenges and factors outside of our daily control – culture is within our control every day.

BFOA: What qualities do you think are essential for building great radio brands?

TC: A clear and consistent brand promise. It should be easy to understand and dependable. Great stations and brands don’t get distracted with many things that are outside of this promise.

BFOA: What advice would you give to someone just starting their broadcasting career?

TC: Having advocates and mentors is critical in all stages of your career. It’s especially important at the beginning. I have benefited greatly from leaders who helped me find opportunities to grow, learn and contribute. Never stop searching for those people!

BFOA: What first drew you to support the BFOA, and why has it remained important to you personally?

TC: Every day, broadcasters across America serve their communities — bringing you the news, the music, the voices that connect us all. But not every broadcaster makes it to the big time. Many work tirelessly for modest wages, dedicating their careers to serving you. Broadcasting is not only an industry but a community. I have personally and professionally benefited greatly from being a part of this community and supporting the BFOA is an opportunity to pay it forward. If our community of broadcasters stays resilient, we can continue to do the important work that we do every single day.
