Our colleague thrived in the
fast-paced environment of a major market station ever since he knocked on doors as an
account executive in 1980. He later became the type of general manager and vice president
that any sales team would be proud to work alongside. Always challenging himself, he took on a position leading a major market group of stations when a health emergency changed his life in one day. He had worked for this new firm fewer than 90 days, which meant he was ineligible
for disability coverage.
A broadcast personality and industry
entrepreneur needs our help. Our colleague was in the forefront of the community as the founder
of a national publication dedicated to the industry. He later pursued several independent
entrepreneurial ventures, unfortunately to no lasting financial success. In December of
2006, he suffered a massive stroke resulting in serious brain damage.
This is a tragic story of a young woman and her husband with two young children ages nine and eleven. Both enjoyed successful careers in the radio industry in New England. Their life was on a successful track until she was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease in 2005. 
For several years after retirement, this couple in their late 70s managed to maintain their independence with social security, savings and part time work. Six years ago, the wife was diagnosed with a rare form of kidney cancer. The husband, a career broadcaster, left his part-time job and became his wife’s full-time caregiver. They struggled along quietly and independently with no family members able to offer support until all of their resources were completely exhausted.
